In 2005, the City of Woodward decided to take charge of its destiny and transform Crystal Beach Park into a recreation destination for the Western Oklahoma region. The aim of the projects at Crystal Beach Park is to create a recreation environment that will spur economic development in the city. In order to accomplish this, the City hired STUDIOARCHITECTURE to lead the revamping effort, completing several projects within the park.
Originally built by the WPA, the rodeo arena at Crystal Beach Park hosts one of the largest rodeos in the Western United States. The new arena is designed to hold numerous events including rodeos, monster truck rallies, PBA tour events, and concerts or other special events. Phase 1 improvements encompass all new upgrades for ADA requirements, including new grandstand access ramps, new toilets, and a concessions area.
A family friendly aquatics park, the new aquatics center consists of various water features, a toddler pool, a four-lane lap pool, and an area for water volleyball. There are two mega-slides, a beach entry into the water, and a sundeck for those interested in sunbathing.
For this project, the City of Woodward wanted a design that not only met the American Legion regulations but could also house special events such as concerts and special ceremonies. Fuller Field seats 750, all of which are covered and contain a Musco lighting system. The baseball complex consists of five fields: two fields sized for ages 12 years and younger, two fields sized for 14-year olds, and one high school regulation size field. The baseball complex seats 480 and, similar to Fuller Field, utilizes a Musco lighting system throughout.
The largest playground in the new complex is located adjacent to the aquatic center, midway between the lake and baseball facilities. It includes three interconnected Evos play systems, as well as a traditional play system for children ages 2 to 5 years old. A Mobius climber is also located in this large play area. Across the lake from the park complex is another, smaller Evos playground that includes a futuristic play structure called an Orbiter Spinner.
